So how did the chicken cross the ocean?
I am adding these articles dealing with the big question of how the
chicken became American in May.
These article were originally posted a few months ago, and
they are based on what I knew at the time. Occasionally, as
I reread these articles now, I add some clarifying comments
in [] square brackets.
From this file you can go to the following articles updating
us on some of the issues involved:
- This is the first of the introductory
articles in this discussion thread about the chicken that I started
at the time. This and the following 2 articles are based on the study
of George Carter that appeared in the early 70s, in the seminal
volume MAN ACROSS THE SEA that contains important articles on many
related subjects.
- This is the second of the 3 articles.
- And here is the third of 3. This discussion
thread became quite a long one eventually!
- Here's one of my replies to Domingo.
This fellow has a famous sense of humour. While trying to refute Carter's
research, he actually found some eyewitness accounts that seem to confirm
it.
- This is my reply to quite an
interesting article posted by Wayne Childers who contributes
some very useful background to this thread. He's talking about
early eyewitness accounts and what terminology the Spanish used.
- This is my reply to an article posted
by Jeffrey. He's objecting to Carter's thesis.
- This is my general summary of the
discussion so far at that point.
- And now we fast-track to the end of February when I found some
recent material dealing with this subject, an important article by
Carl Johannessen. Here's a brief
summary of that article.
